Here is a simple change that can dramatically improve your virtual meetings: stand up.
Not for every call. Not for the quick 10-minute check-in with a colleague. But for the meetings that matter, the ones where you need to be convincing and engaging, standing makes a real difference.
Three reasons to stand
1. Your body language becomes visible. When you sit, the camera captures your head and shoulders. When you stand, your upper body is in frame. Your posture is naturally more upright. Your gestures become visible. You look more dynamic and more confident.
2. You use space like in a physical meeting. Think about how you present in a conference room. You stand. You move. You use the space around you. Standing in a virtual meeting brings back that natural dynamic. You are not glued to a chair. You can step back, lean in, use your hands.
3. Much more interaction is possible. Standing creates energy. And energy is contagious, even through a screen. You are more likely to vary your voice, use gestures, and engage actively with the other participants. The result: more convincing, more engaging.
The practical setup
You need a standing desk or a raised surface for your laptop. Position the camera at eye level or slightly above. Make sure you have enough space to gesture without going out of frame. Good lighting and a clean background remain important.
Test it before your first important standing meeting. Check the framing, the angle, and the audio. Once it is set up, it takes zero extra effort.
When to sit
Quick internal calls, informal catch-ups, and meetings where you are mostly listening. Not every meeting needs the extra energy of a standing setup.
The verdict
For important meetings, stand up. You will be more present, more dynamic, and more persuasive. Your audience will feel the difference immediately.
