Welcome to the first article in the "Either/Or?" series. In each edition, we take a common sales or presentation dilemma and give you a clear recommendation. Today: your background in video meetings.
Virtual backgrounds are tempting
Blurred living rooms, branded company wallpapers, tropical beach scenes. Virtual backgrounds promise a clean, professional look at the click of a button. But they come with real downsides that most people overlook.
Three reasons to use your natural background
1. More depth in the image. A real background creates natural depth. Your camera captures layers: you in front, objects behind you, a wall further back. That depth makes the image feel natural and pleasant to look at. A flat virtual background removes all of that.
2. No distracting glitches. Move your hand. Pick up a pen. Lean to the side. With a virtual background, parts of you disappear and reappear. Your audience notices, even subconsciously. It pulls attention away from your message.
3. Authenticity. People buy from people. A real background signals that you are comfortable, confident, and have nothing to hide. That matters in sales.
What does a good background look like?
Keep it simple. A tidy bookshelf, a neutral wall, a plant. Remove clutter and personal items that might distract. Make sure the lighting is good: face a window or use a ring light. The goal is professional without being sterile.
You do not need a studio. You need a space that looks intentional.
The verdict
Ditch the virtual background. Show your real environment. It looks better on camera, avoids technical distractions, and builds trust.
